Suspect in Sister’s Strangulation to Face Magistrate on Wed.

In an unrelated case, a woman in the south-central Viotia prefecture was arrested over the weekend for illegally burying her deceased mother's body in the yard of their home

A 50-year-old Thessaloniki man accused of strangling to death his 59-year-old sister on Saturday afternoon was granted a temporary extension until Wednesday to provide testimony to an investigating magistrate.
He will remain in custody until then on charges of intentional homicide.
Initial press reports have the alleged perpetrator citing “mental confusion” and “pressure by other relatives” as leading to the heinous crime.
According to the same reports, the suspect had picked up his sister from a local hospital after her 12-day hospitalization for a stroke she suffered.
The woman was strangled with a plastic bag fashioned as a garrote after reportedly receiving a disturbing phone call from another relative, which reports do not identify, supposedly castigating him for again caring for his sister. The suspect subsequently called a police emergency line.

Woman charged with burying elderly mother’s body in stable to continue receiving state payments

Meanwhile, in an unrelated case, a woman in the south-central Viotia prefecture was arrested over the weekend for illegally burying her deceased mother’s body in a stable near their home. The woman’s motive was to continue receiving her elderly’s mother’s disability and social security payments, reports state, citing her confession to authorities.

A prosecutor’s order apparently set in motion an investigation to uncover the case, as the 93-year-old woman had not been seen since the summer of 2023 in her village.
According to reports, the 62-year-old suspect, the supervisor of public citizens service center (KEP) in the town of Inofyta, had at one point showed up at a police precinct with another elderly woman, who was suffering from senility, in an attempt to present her as her mother. Nevertheless, it soon emerged that the latter woman was a local resident and unrelated to the suspect.

Reports maintain that the woman confessed to police.
