A 16-year-old boy is in critical condition after suffering severe head injuries in a firearm accident in western Greece, according to local authorities. The teenager was rushed to the University Hospital of Ioannina following the incident, which occurred on Thursday afternoon, January 1.
The accident took place at a family home in the town of Filippiada, in the region of Preveza. According to initial reports, the teenager reportedly took his father’s hunting rifle without being noticed, intending to scare birds away from the yard. Under circumstances that remain unclear, he slipped and fell, causing the weapon to discharge.
The gunshot resulted in a serious head injury, prompting an emergency transfer to a specialized hospital for treatment. Doctors describe his condition as critical, while he continues to receive intensive medical care.
Following the incident, the boy’s father was arrested on charges related to improper storage of a firearm. He was later released on the verbal order of a public prosecutor. Local police have launched a preliminary investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the accident.
