Authorities in northern Greece arrested a 55-year-old after discovering 68 dogs living in unhygienic conditions in a single-family home in Thermi. The man faces steep fines under animal welfare and health regulations

Authorities in Thessaloniki have arrested a 55-year-old man after discovering 68 dogs living in squalid conditions in a single-family home in a village within the municipality of Thermi. The animals were found in unhygienic surroundings that failed to ensure their health and well-being.

Police and veterinary inspectors conducted a coordinated inspection following complaints. The outdoor area where the dogs were kept contained large amounts of feces, and the fencing was makeshift and inadequate in several places. Inside the house, conditions were equally poor, with strong odors and unsanitary living spaces that did not provide a safe or comfortable environment for the animals.

The man was charged under Greek animal welfare laws as well as for violations of the Health Code. Administrative fines totaling €68,500 were issued. The inspection was carried out in the presence of a magistrate, with collaboration from the Veterinary Service and the Public Health Department of Thessaloniki.

The rescued dogs are now under proper care.
