Tourist Falls from Athens’ Lycabettus Hill, Investigation Underway

A man in his 30s from abroad suffered serious injuries after falling from a cliff near St. George’s chapel on Lycabettus Hill. Authorities are investigating the circumstances, including whether strong winds played a role

A serious accident occurred in Athens on Tuesday morning when a tourist fell from a significant height at Lycabettus Hill, one of the city’s most popular viewpoints.

The man, believed to be around 30 years old and from overseas, fell from the edge of the courtyard at St. George’s chapel, where a marble slab marks the cliff’s boundary. At the time, strong winds were reported in the area.

Witnesses said he first struck the rocks below before landing on the stone steps beneath. Emergency calls were made immediately, prompting the arrival of a rapid-response motorcycle unit from Greece’s National Emergency Aid Centre (EKAB) along with Fire Service crews.

Police temporarily restricted access to the chapel, while municipal officers closed the road from the nearby open-air theatre. Firefighters, using rescue equipment and assisted by EKAB medics, reached the injured man and safely moved him from the site.

To avoid further strain, rescuers used the hill’s funicular railway to transport him down to an ambulance. Police are taking witness statements and are considering the possibility that he may have been caught by a gust of wind while taking a photograph.
