Turkish Boats in Aegean Did Not Enter Territorial Waters

Greek fishermen accuse Turkish crews of threats and warning shots near Samothraki, while the coast guard insists the vessels remained in international waters

Tensions flared late Tuesday night in the northern Aegean, when Greek fishermen clashed with Turkish boats near the area between Samothraki and Thasos.

According to local fishermen, around 20 Greek vessels confronted a large group of Turkish fishing boats that had approached as close as four to six nautical miles from the Greek coast. They claim they were subjected to insults, threats, and even warning shots fired into the air.

The incident escalated around 22:00, with Greek crews filming the confrontation. Fishermen say they alerted authorities, but no immediate intervention followed.

In an official statement, however, the Hellenic Coast Guard clarified that the Turkish vessels never entered Greek territorial waters. Based on data from the European Fisheries Control Agency’s Integrated Maritime Services system, all Turkish boats remained in international waters throughout the activity.

The Coast Guard confirmed this finding with three patrol boats deployed in the area. Judicial authorities have been informed, and a preliminary investigation is underway.
