A search and rescue operation is underway on the Ionian Island of Lefkas after two individuals doing stand-up paddle (SUP) have gone missing.

According to a report by public broadcaster ERT, the two tourists sent a 112 distress message via their smartphones when strong winds prevented them from reaching the northwestern shores of the island, carrying their paddles into the open sea.

The coastguard’s national rescue and coordination center is heading the search efforts, while private boats are also taking part in the mission.
