Unsettled Weather Forecast for Greece on Thursday

Dropping temperatures and scattered thunderstorms are expected across Greece, before African dust returns over the weekend.

Greece is set to experience slightly cooler and unsettled weather on Thursday, with scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms forecast across much of the country.

African dust, which moved into parts of the country earlier this week, is expected to clear with visibility improving significantly.

Winds in northeastern Greece will blow from northerly directions, while westerly winds of 2 to 4 Beaufort, locally reaching 5 Beaufort, will prevail elsewhere. In the southern Aegean, winds are expected to strengthen to 6 to 7 Beaufort.

Temperatures are set to drop slightly, returning to typical levels for the season. Highs in western and northern Greece are expected to reach 18C to 20C, while the rest of the country will see temperatures between 16C and 25C.

In the wider Athens area, Thursday will begin with sunshine and limited cloud cover, although local showers are expected later in the day, mainly in northern and eastern parts of Attica. Temperatures in the capital will range from 16C to 25C, with winds blowing westerly at 3 to 4 Beaufort.

Weekend Forecast

On Friday, May 15, weather conditions across Greece are expected to remain mostly fair, with extended sunshine and only isolated showers or brief storms in northern mountainous areas. Temperatures will remain close to seasonal averages, reaching up to 25C in eastern mainland regions.

Instability is forecast to return on Saturday, May 16, as cloud cover increases and local rain showers and isolated thunderstorms spread from western Greece to other parts of the country. At the same time, a new wave of African dust is expected to affect mainly western, central and southern regions, accompanied by slightly higher temperatures and southerly winds reaching up to 6 Beaufort.
