Weather Shuts Down Schools on Greek Islands

Schools remain closed in Rhodes and Zakynthos because of severe weather, while Athens schools are shut for a local holiday. Authorities stress safety as top priority

Schools in Rhodes and Zakynthos remained closed on Friday, October 3, as severe weather swept across parts of Greece. The closures affect all levels of education, with local mayors citing safety concerns as heavy rainfall and strong winds coincided with school commuting hours.

In Rhodes, Mayor Alexander Coliadis said the decision followed an emergency weather bulletin predicting worsening conditions in the Dodecanese. “The peak of the weather coincides with the hours of student and teacher travel, so a precautionary suspension was deemed necessary,” the announcement noted.

Zakynthos extends closures

In Zakynthos, Mayor Giorgos Stasinopoulos ordered all schools and municipal nurseries to remain shut. Authorities urged residents to limit travel to essential needs only and follow civil protection guidelines as the storm moved through the Ionian islands.

Athens schools closed for local holiday

Meanwhile, in Athens, schools were also closed on Friday, but for a different reason. The capital observed a local public holiday marking the feast day of its patron saint, Dionysius the Areopagite. Classes will resume on Monday, October 6.
