Wildfire Battle in Chios as Blaze Contained in Halkidiki

Firefighters continue to fight an active wildfire on the Greek island of Chios, while a blaze in Halkidiki has been brought under control. Authorities remain on high alert as strong winds and hot weather keep the risk of new fires high nationwide

Greek firefighting forces remain focused on an active wildfire burning between the villages of Leptopoda and Kampia on the island of Chios. The blaze, fueled by strong winds and hot weather, has heightened concern among local residents as fire incidents rise across the country.

In northern Greece, a forest fire that broke out last night near Stratoni in Halkidiki has been partially contained. According to the Fire Service, the flames ignited around 8:30 p.m. and were quickly met with a large-scale response — 60 firefighters, 20 fire engines, and three ground teams worked to bring the situation under control. No residential areas were threatened.

In Achaia, western Greece, conditions are improving in the Bala area after a flare-up yesterday. Authorities made two detentions as part of investigations into the fire’s cause. Fire crews remain on high operational readiness.

The Civil Protection service has issued a daily fire risk map, warning that the danger of new outbreaks remains high. The alert covers Attica, the Peloponnese, Central Greece, Thessaly, Central and Eastern Macedonia-Thrace, and the islands of the North and South Aegean.

“Firefighting forces are on heightened alert nationwide to ensure rapid response to any new incidents,” officials said.
