A large forest fire has broken out on the Greek island of Kefalonia, prompting emergency evacuation orders for several areas. The blaze began in the region of Karavados and has already triggered a major firefighting response.
Authorities activated the national 112 Emergency Communications Service, sending alerts to residents and visitors in Karavados, Dorizata, and Kerameies, urging them to move towards the town of Argostoli for safety.
Firefighting efforts are underway with 28 firefighters, two ground teams from the 16th EMODE unit, seven fire engines, volunteer crews, four aircraft, and two helicopters battling the flames. Local government water tankers are also assisting.
Kefalonia’s mayor, Theofilos Michalatos, stated in a televised interview that there are indications the fire may have been deliberately set, as there are three separate ignition points.
Strong winds and dry conditions are adding to the challenge, as firefighting teams work to prevent the flames from spreading to residential areas. Evacuation operations and suppression efforts remain in full force.
