Greece is facing a severe wildfire crisis, with fires raging across Achaia, Chios, Preveza, and Zakynthos, capturing the attention of international media. Major news outlets have been providing extensive reports and live updates from the affected regions.
According to CNN, “Several villages and a hotel in Greece were evacuated on Tuesday due to the threat from fires fueled by strong winds.”
Italian newspaper Corriere Della Sera reported that residents of Chios were trapped by flames and had to be rescued by sea, highlighting the particularly dire situation in the village of Volissos. Images accompanying the report show the scale of the fires that have engulfed parts of the island over the past 24 hours.

Global news agencies, including Reuters and the Associated Press, have circulated images depicting the widespread destruction. Belgian newspaper Le Soir reported that 152 new fires broke out across Greece within 48 hours, emphasizing the intense blaze in Achaia and noting multiple village evacuations. The coverage also links the fires to an ongoing heatwave sweeping Europe.

Spain’s El Periodico described the situation as a result of an “explosive combination” of strong winds and extreme drought. The report stated that over 100 fires are currently active, with four arrests made in connection to fires caused by burning garbage and other hazardous activities.
The Greek government has requested assistance from the European Civil Protection Mechanism to help contain the fires and support affected communities.
