Authorities have launched an urgent investigation after a woman died following a fall from a cliff at Meteora, one of Greece’s most visited heritage sites.
According to initial reports, the woman had been visiting one of the six active monasteries perched atop the towering rock formations near Trikala, central Greece, when the incident occurred under still-unclear circumstances.
Emergency services, including police, firefighters, and an ambulance, rushed to the scene shortly after the fall was reported.
The woman’s handbag containing her personal belongings was found inside the monastery restrooms.
Local media report that a passerby captured footage of the fall on a cell phone.
Meteora, an UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its dramatic rock pillars and centuries-old monasteries, attracts millions of visitors each year and is home to one of the most prominent religious landmarks in Greece after Mount Athos. The site is a popular attraction for climbers and religious tourists.
