Antetokounmpo Opens Up on Wealth, Discipline and Kobe Bryant’s Lasting Influence

The two-time NBA MVP revealed that he made $120 million in a single year, stressing the importance of financial discipline and warning young athletes about the dangers of reckless spending after retirement.

Giannis Antetokounmpo spoke candidly about money, ambition and long-term financial security in an interview with “The School of Hard Knocks,” delivering a powerful message to younger generations about the importance of smart investing and building lasting wealth.

The Milwaukee Bucks superstar explained that one of his biggest priorities is maximizing the years he still has at the top level of basketball in order to strengthen his financial future and create stability for both himself and his family.

Antetokounmpo also reflected on the moment he realized he had become a millionaire, while describing the dramatic shift in his life after entering the NBA. Raised in difficult circumstances and having sold items on the streets as a child, he said he understands what it means to start from nothing.

“I became a millionaire at 20,” he said. “I’m an NBA player.”

Asked about his earnings, the two-time NBA MVP revealed that he made $120 million in a single year.
Despite his enormous success, Antetokounmpo stressed the importance of financial discipline, warning young athletes about the dangers of reckless spending after retirement.

“Sixty percent of athletes go bankrupt within six years of retiring,” he said. “They focus on gold chains and expensive cars.”

He then drew a distinction between appearance and real financial security.
“Being rich is what you see. Wealth is what you don’t see. Extreme wealth is what you don’t see but still have because you haven’t spent it — you keep investing it.”

Antetokounmpo added that he believes long-term investing is the key to generational wealth.
“Your money doubles every seven years. If I invest it in the market, even without doing much, I could probably become a billionaire while I’m still playing basketball.”

The Greek star also shared a deeply personal story involving the late Kobe Bryant, revealing advice from the NBA legend that continues to motivate him to this day.
“I told him, ‘Give me a challenge,’” Antetokounmpo recalled. “And he said, ‘Giannis, I challenge you to become MVP.’”

Inspired by Bryant’s words, Antetokounmpo wrote “MVP” on the cap of the water bottle he carried every day as a constant reminder of his goal.
“The next year I became MVP, and then I won it again,” he said. “Talk about the things you want to achieve. When your mind hears them, it does whatever it takes to make them happen.”
