Heads turned in the coastal town of Nafplio, located in the northeastern part of the Peloponnese, as the imposing superyacht named “Yas” docked at the picturesque town’s port on Monday, August 28.
The impressive sea vessel, measuring 142 meters in length and 15 meters in width, belongs to a member of the royal family of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and flies a Cayman flag.
The presence of the superyacht is linked to the presence of the National Security Advisor of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who is in the coastal town of Porto Cheli, 78 km south of Nafplio.
Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan is reportedly inspecting the progress of works of a strategic investment of the Scarlet Beach S.A project worth approximately 200 million euros in Ermioni, northwest of Porto Cheli.
The yacht can accommodate up to 60 visitors in 30 lavish suites, supported by a crew of 56. But what truly sets the “Yas” apart from other mega yachts is its unusual origin. Unlike most luxury vessels that are purpose-built, this yacht began its life as a warship.
Originally, the Dutch frigate HNLMS Piet Hein was a Kortenaer-class frigate launched in 1978 and commissioned into the Royal Netherlands Navy in 1981. It was later transformed into the striking superyacht now known as “Yas.”
The conversion stands as a rare example of redefining shipbuilding tradition, blending naval engineering with modern luxury and technology.
