In recent years, the Municipality of Meteora has been steadily establishing itself as one of Greece’s leading destinations for religious tourism, with the unique celebration of Easter in Meteora at the heart of its appeal. Under the leadership of Mayor Lefteris Avramopoulos, the local administration is implementing a comprehensive action plan aimed at positioning the municipality as the “capital of Greek Orthodox Easter.”
A central pillar of this effort is the preservation and promotion of the region’s rich Easter traditions and religious events. Through an extensive program running from the weekend of Lazarus Saturday through to Easter Tuesday, the municipality offers visitors an immersive and authentic experience—one that blends deep spirituality with local heritage and cultural expression.
Among the standout customs is the “Lighting of the Fanos” in Theopetra, a striking ritual symbolizing the Resurrection, which illuminates the Meteora sky on Holy Saturday night. Equally significant is the “Farewell of Lazarus” in Gavros, a tradition with roots stretching back to antiquity, highlighting the active participation of the local community. In Kastraki, the procession of sacred icons and holy relics offers a profound expression of faith, reinforcing the enduring bond between residents and their spiritual heritage.
The defining moments of Holy Week and Easter in Meteora—from the solemn liturgies in churches and monasteries to the Resurrection service set against the dramatic backdrop of towering rock formations, as well as the Vespers of Love and the traditional Easter festivities—combine to create a truly unforgettable experience for visitors.
Particular mention should be made of the “Paschalogiorta,” communal celebrations held in the days following Easter. During these gatherings, residents come together in an atmosphere of joy and unity, reviving customs and traditions that deepen the experiential connection for visitors.
Speaking to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency, Mayor Avramopoulos said the municipality aims to promote Meteora as a destination where faith, tradition, and culture meet outstanding natural beauty, adding that efforts are underway to establish it internationally as a key reference point for Greek Orthodox Easter.
