Greece has expressed firm support for a reparations loan to Ukraine, as Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis emphasized upon his arrival at the European Council in Brussels.
Speaking to the press, Mitsotakis highlighted the urgent need for decisive action to ensure Ukraine’s financial stability amid ongoing challenges posed by the Russian invasion. He stressed that any solution must be legally and fiscally sound, accounting for both military expenditures and the specific priorities of EU member states.
“The core issue is to secure a sustainable mechanism for financing Ukraine,” Mitsotakis stated, reaffirming Greece’s commitment to stand alongside Ukraine and support initiatives that strengthen its security and defense capabilities.
In addition to the reparations loan, discussions at the summit will address the EU’s long-term budget framework, marking the start of a complex negotiation period expected to last several months. Mitsotakis reiterated Greece’s support for European cohesion policies and the Common Agricultural Policy, aiming to ensure adequate funding for citizens and practical support for farmers and livestock producers across the continent.
The Prime Minister also highlighted Greece’s domestic defense achievements, pointing to the upcoming ceremony in Lorient, France, where the Greek flag will be raised on the first of four modern Belharra frigates, the FDI HN «Kimon». Mitsotakis described the event as a moment of national pride, demonstrating the modernization of Greece’s Armed Forces with advanced equipment and a focus on personnel.
