Spain Restricts US Military Aircraft Over Iran War

Madrid has reportedly barred US planes linked to strikes on Iran from its airspace, escalating tensions with Washington amid growing European divisions over the conflict

Spain has closed its airspace to U.S. military aircraft involved in attacks on Iran, according to a report by Spanish newspaper El País, marking a further step in its opposition to the ongoing conflict.

The report, which cites military sources, says the decision goes beyond Spain’s earlier refusal to allow the use of jointly operated military bases, effectively forcing U.S. aircraft to reroute around Spanish airspace when heading toward the Middle East.

The restriction reportedly includes an exception for emergency situations.

Spain’s Ministry of Defense did not immediately respond to a request for comment to Reuters.

Political opposition to Iran strikes

Spanish Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo said the move reflects a broader policy stance by Madrid against involvement in the war.

Speaking to radio Cadena SER, Cuerpo said the decision aligns with Spain’s position “not to participate in or contribute to a war which was initiated unilaterally and against international law.”

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has been among the most outspoken European leaders opposing the U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran, describing them as reckless and illegal.

Rising tensions with Washington

The decision adds to growing diplomatic friction between Madrid and Washington over the conflict. U.S. President Donald Trump has previously threatened to cut trade with Spain following its refusal to allow U.S. forces access to Spanish military bases.
