Two Dead In Shooting At South Carolina State University

A shooting took place at South Carolina State University on 12th February, leaving two dead and one injured.

Two people were killed and one injured in a shooting on the evening of 12th February at South Carolina State University, a university whose student body is mainly African-American.

At around 21:15 local time, there were reports of gunshots in a room in the Hugine Suites dormitory, the university administration announced in a post on Facebook. They noted that a curfew was imposed on the campus which lasted many hours.

Other details are not currently known, while it has not been announced whether the perpetrator has been caught or is still at large.

“University officials have not yet confirmed the victims’ identities or the condition of the wounded person,” the university noted in their Facebook post.

The university has cancelled all lessons on the 13th February and the university will remain under a policy of restricted entry. The university has offered counseling to students.

President Alexander Conyers had previously stressed that the safety of students and visitors is a “top priority”. This sentiment is once again at the forefront as counselors mobilize for a traumatized student population.

Hugine Suites recently suffered another shooting on 4th October 2025, during a celebration for returning alumni. The shooting killed 19-year-old Jaliyah Butler.

After this,  Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Gameday reported that the university’s leadership had committed to ensuring campus safety. The plans called for a system of controlled entry checks and increased surveillance. Despite these measures, violence near student dormitories continues to happen.
