Eleven people were killed in a shooting attack that took place on Tuesday afternoon at a school complex in the Swedish city of Örebro, approximately 200 kilometers west of Stockholm. The facility serves adults and children, including migrants and individuals with disabilities.
Police said “around 10 people” were killed, in what has been called the worst mass shooting in the history of Sweden. The suspected perpetrator is among the dead.
The news of multiple fatalities was initially reported by the newspaper Aftonbladet as well as public broadcasters SVT and TV4.
Hours later, police confirmed that around ten people had died, including the perpetrator. Authorities stated that the attacker acted alone, using a firearm and that there was no apparent terrorist motive or prior warning signs. However, the suspect’s profile and motives have not yet been fully determined, and investigations are ongoing.
The number of injured individuals remains unknown. Earlier, however, the BBC reported that at least six people had been taken to the emergency department of the local hospital, four of whom sustained severe injuries and were undergoing surgery. According to the same source, none of the injured are minors.
