The United Nations Security Council will convene an emergency meeting on Monday, following a request by Estonia after a reported airspace violation by Russian aircraft.
Greece will be represented at the session by Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis. The briefing to Council members will be delivered by Miroslav Jenča, UN Assistant Secretary-General for Europe, Central Asia and the Americas.
According to Estonia, three Russian fighter jets crossed into its airspace on September 19, remaining over the Baltic Sea area for 12 minutes. Tallinn said the pilots ignored repeated calls from two Italian F-35 jets operating under NATO’s Baltic Air Policing mission, before finally being escorted out.
The incident is the second in less than two weeks in which the Council has been called to address Russian incursions into NATO member territory. On September 12, a similar case involving Poland prompted urgent discussions.
Estonia described the September 19 breach as a “dangerous escalation,” noting that the jets flew 10 kilometers inland and came within minutes of the capital. The country also said Russia has violated its airspace four times this year.
Moscow has denied the allegation, claiming its aircraft were flying over international waters en route to Kaliningrad.
