Video of Houthi Strike on Greek-Owned Vessel in Red Sea

This incident is the first successful strike against a commercial vessel by Houthi forces in the Red Sea since November 2024

A dramatic video released by Yemen’s Houthi-controlled armed forces shows the moment a Greek-managed cargo ship, Magic Seas, was struck and ultimately sunk in the Red Sea, marking a significant escalation in maritime tensions in the region.

Ship Targeted by Drones and Missiles

The vessel, under Greek management, was reportedly attacked off the coast of Yemen by Houthi forces—also known as Ansar Allah—who claimed responsibility for the operation. According to their military spokesperson, Yahya Saree, the Magic Seas was targeted because it belonged to a company that had allegedly violated the Houthis’ declared ban on vessels docking at Israeli ports.

The attack involved a combination of two unmanned surface drones, five ballistic missiles, and cruise missiles. While the ship’s security team successfully neutralized two sea drones, two others struck the vessel. Explosives appear to have been placed on board, leading to the vessel’s eventual sinking.

Entire Crew Rescued

All 22 crew members aboard the Magic Seas were rescued by Yemeni Coast Guard forces. The crew included 17 Filipino nationals, as well as seafarers from Romania, Vietnam, and Sri Lanka. There were no reports of injuries or fatalities.

The Magic Seas had not requested protection from EUNAVFOR ASPIDES, the European Union’s naval mission operating in the area. At the time of the incident, no warships from the mission were in proximity to offer immediate support.

This incident is the first successful strike against a commercial vessel by Houthi forces in the Red Sea since November 2024. The renewed threat raises concerns about the safety of shipping lanes in one of the world’s most crucial maritime corridors, already strained by regional instability.
