A lone shooter killed four people, including one police officer, on Monday inside a Manhattan building that houses private-equity firm Blackstone’s midtown office and the headquarters for the NFL, among other companies.
A Blackstone executive was among those killed by the gunman, according to people familiar with the matter.
Shots were fired at 6:28 p.m. at 345 Park Avenue, according to police.
The gunman, who is believed to be Shane Tamura, carried an M4 rifle, according to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch . He died by shooting himself in the chest, she said.
Blackstone employees shared messages over email and Microsoft Teams that there was a shooter in the lobby and warned each other not to go downstairs, an employee said. Some barricaded themselves in offices and bathrooms.
KPMG US also has an office in the building. “Our hearts go out to the victims of this horrific act and their families. We are incredibly grateful for the bravery of building security and law enforcement,” said Russ Grote, a spokesman for the accounting firm.
Dozens of police cars and ambulances blocked Park Avenue from at least East 52nd to East 54th streets.
