High Risk of Fires in Several Regions of Greece on Wednesday

Temperatures have returned to seasonal norms, but the winds have picked up, putting several of Greece's regions on high alert for fires.

Greece is on alert for more fires on Wednesday, as winds have picked up following several days of a heat wave. As of Wednesday morning, a fire had already been declared on the Greek island of Cephalonia.

According to Greece’s civil protection authority, there is a high risk of fires in many regions of Greece, including the greater Athens region, the Cyclades islands, Crete, and Evia. The map is visible below in an X post, with the regions at high risk depicted in yellow color.

On Tuesday, fires broke out in the southern Athens seaside suburb of Anavyssos, as well as on the island of Lesvos, marking the “start” of fire season in the country.
