A trio of wildfires of the season requiring the fire brigade’s response, the first such blazes of the season were reported on Tuesday, with the first coming southeast of Athens in a low vegetation coastal expanse.

A notification was sent to local residents to evacuate the area, between the Anavyssos and Palea Fokia coastal townships.

Authorities said 45 firefighters were operating at the scene with 13 vehicles, along with municipal crews supplying water trucks. Additionally, six fire-dropping aircraft were operating against the blaze. Strong winds were blowing in the area.

Additionally, a major wildfire was reported on the eastern Aegean Island of Lesvos, and at the Avdira township (Xanthi prefecture) in northeast Greece. Thirty firefighters operating nine vehicles, and assisted by three aircraft, were fighting the blaze. As in the other blazes on the day, the affected area was described as low vegetation and not forestland.

The wildfire on Lesvos was located in an area dominated by olive trees and low vegetation flora. Thirty-six firefighters operating nine vehicles and aided by nine aircraft – three helicopters and six fixed-wing planes – were deployed.

The blaze was centered at the Aglefyros site on the island.
