Seventeen Days of Literature: Athens Book Festival Returns to Pedion tou Areos

Athens celebrates literature with the city’s biggest book festival, bringing together 210 publishers, 285 stands, and more than 200 cultural events from September 5 to 21

Athens’ largest celebration of books and readers returns this September, transforming Pedion tou Areos into a vibrant hub of literature, culture, and community. From September 5 to 21, the 53rd Athens Book Festival will welcome visitors with an impressive lineup: 210 publishing houses, 285 stands, and more than 200 events, ranging from book presentations and roundtable discussions to concerts, theater performances, and interactive educational activities.

Despite its central location, Pedion tou Areos offers cool shade, greenery, and an almost out-of-the-city feel — making it the perfect setting for an afternoon stroll, a quiet read under the trees, or the chance to discover new titles and emerging authors. Visitors can also enjoy the rich parallel program, which includes concerts, children’s theater, and literary talks designed to attract both long-time book lovers and new readers alike.

The festival officially opens on Monday, September 8, with free admission for visitors throughout the event.

  • Friday & Saturday: 18:00–23:00
