A Cretan olive oil with the brand name “Kriti” was included in the list of products with the protected geographical indication (PGI) label by the European Commission (EC).
The PGI designation is granted to products when either the production, processing, or preparation takes place in a particular geographical region.
The product gets its unique character from a combination of the limestone-rich terrain, the plenty of sunshine, Mediterranean climate, coupled with traditional olive-crushing techniques passed down from generation to generation.

These new entries are added to the more than 3,675 protected designations already included in the eAmbrosia database.
The oil is produced exclusively in Crete, where the cultivation of olive oil is intrinsically linked to the island’s history and way of life for millennia.
The Cretan product is considered a high-quality virgin olive oil produced from olive groves across the island, characterized by low toxicity, a shining green color, and a fruity aroma. These properties make it especially stable and aromatic.
Protected Geographical Regions in the EU identify and protect products from specific areas that have a quality or reputation linked to their geographical origin, including food, wine, spirits, and, since late 2025, craft and industrial goods.
