European Chief Prosecutor Laura Kovesi is scheduled to arrive in Greece on the evening of Tuesday, September 30, to review the legal proceedings in two high-profile cases, the Tempi rail disaster investigation and the farming (OPEKEPE) scandal, both of which are still in the Greek public arena.
Laura Kovesi is expected to hold a press conference and will address all major issues within her jurisdiction. During her stay, she will visit the Athens office of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) and meet with senior national officials, including government ministers, the police chief, customs authorities, and the attorney general. Her visit will focus on cases of fraud against the European Union that are currently being investigated by EPPO’s Greek branch.
Kovesi served as the Romanian chief anti-corruption prosecutor before becoming the first Chief Prosecutor of the European Union with a mandate to combat corruption and financial crime. She has led high-profile investigations across Europe, targeting corruption, fraud, and money laundering, and is widely respected for her uncompromising stance. She has already played a key role in exposing major scandals, including in Greece.
Key Greek investigations
Farming (OPEKEPE) scandal: Considered the largest case of fraud involving EU agricultural subsidies in Greece, with losses amounting to hundreds of millions of euros. The EPPO investigation under Kövesi uncovered systemic corruption involving fake pasturelands, false tax IDs, and political interference.
Tempi rail disaster: Kovesi is investigating Greece’s failure to implement crucial railway safety systems before the tragedy. EPPO has issued a strongly critical report over Contract 717, related to railway signaling and remote-control infrastructure, which is tied to the Tempi crash. She has also accused the Greek government of placing obstacles in the way of her inquiry.
