The founder and former leader of the outlawed Golden Dawn (Chrysi Avgi) party, Nikos Mihaloliakos, was released from prison on Friday on health reasons.
Mihaloliakos and several of the top lieutenants of his extreme right party had been convicted of, among others, establishing and running a criminal organization.
He reportedly faced serious health problems after suffering from the coronavirus a few years ago.
Members of judicial country in the south-central city of Lamia, where the Domokos Prison where he was incarcerated has jurisdiction, approved of the conditional release due to health reasons.
The beginning of the end for Golden Dawn came in September 2013 with the stabbing death of rapper Pavlos Fyssas by a party cadre, Giorgos Roupakias. A file containing all of the cases related to alleged GD wrongdoing was then compiled and delivered to the independent judiciary by then justice minister Nikos Dendias.
Mihaloliakos is considered to have been an openly neo-Nazi political figure during his highly provocative and extremist political career.
