Greece marks a dual celebration today, as Nov. 21 is both Armed Forces Day and the Feast of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary, Minister of National Defense Nikos Dendias noted in a post on X.
“It is a day of double celebration: the Presentation of the Virgin Mary and the Armed Forces of our Homeland,” he wrote.

Dendias emphasized that, “under the protection of the Invincible General and their Patron, our Armed Forces have written glorious chapters in Greek history.”

He added that the ongoing “Agenda 2030” reforms aim to bolster national defense through changes in both equipment and strategic philosophy, placing particular focus on personnel—“the key multiplier of military strength.”

He went on to offer good wishes: “Warm greetings to all members of the Armed Forces and to those currently in service!” Dendias concluded by noting that it is thanks to their dedication that “Greece defends its territorial integrity and sovereign rights.”

Flag-Raising Ceremony at the Acropolis

Each year on November 21, the Feast of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary coincides with Armed Forces Day, honoring the contribution of the military both in times of war and peace. The commemoration was established after the restoration of democracy in Greece.

As part of today’s events, the official raising of the Greek flag took place at 8:00 a.m. on the Acropolis.
Schedule of Events for Armed Forces Day

• 11:00 am – Official prayer service at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens, led by Archbishop Ieronymos.
• 11:40 am – Wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
• 5:09 pm – Lowering of the Greek flag at the Acropolis.

Additional nationwide events include:

• General flag display at military units, facilities, and naval vessels from 08:00 until sunset on Friday, Nov. 21, 2025.
• Evening illumination of units, facilities, and ships on the same day.
• Nov. 23, 2025, at 7:00 pm – A celebratory event at the Athens Concert Hall.
• Nov. 21–24, 2025 – A joint Armed Forces exhibition at Syntagma Metro Station.

The Significance of the Double Holiday

The pairing of these two observances is not accidental. The Virgin Mary has long been venerated as the “Invincible General,” a title rooted in Byzantine tradition and linked to the protection of the Greek nation.

The Exhibition at Syntagma

The Armed Forces’ joint exhibition at the Syntagma Metro Station will run from Nov. 21 to 24, 2025. Open from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm, it aims to bring the public closer to the work, capabilities, and activities of the Greek Armed Forces through exhibits and interactive displays—promoting openness, public engagement, and deeper understanding of their mission.
