Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will meet with Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides in Athens on Wednesday morning as part of the 3rd Intergovernmental Summit between Greece and Cyprus. The high-level meeting, held at the Maximos Mansion, aims to strengthen bilateral ties and coordinate policies on regional and European issues.
The talks will center on the latest regional developments, the Cyprus issue following the recent election of Tufan Erhürman as the new leader of the Turkish Cypriot community, and Cyprus’s upcoming Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2026.
Following their private meeting, Mitsotakis and Christodoulides will attend the plenary session of the Intergovernmental Summit before making joint statements to the press.
Energy, Security, and European Cooperation on the Agenda
Energy policy will also a be key topic, especially in light of recent developments in the Eastern Mediterranean. Government sources said Mitsotakis will brief Christodoulides on his recent meetings with U.S. officials and agreements signed in Athens, which enhance Greece’s geopolitical and energy role in the wider region, extending as far as Ukraine.
The summit, established as an institutional framework in 2023, seeks to deepen cooperation across multiple sectors beyond foreign policy. Ministers from both countries participated in discussions covering environment, health, education, transport, digital governance, housing, civil protection, justice, culture, and foreign affairs, with a focus on joint initiatives and the exchange of best practices.
Strengthening a Longstanding Partnership
This year’s session marks two years since the official establishment of the Greece–Cyprus Intergovernmental Summit, reflecting the enduring partnership between the two nations and their shared commitment to regional stability, European integration, and coordinated policy-making.
