Greece’s Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis is in Brussels to take part in the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting, where EU ministers will discuss key international developments.
According to the Greek Foreign Ministry, the main items on the agenda include the situation in Iran, broader developments in the Middle East, and the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Bilateral Meeting with India
On the sidelines of the meeting, Gerapetritis is expected to hold talks with Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, the foreign minister of India.
The meeting follows a recent visit by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to New Delhi, where he attended an international conference on artificial intelligence and met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Discussions between the two foreign ministers are expected to focus on maritime security, bilateral cooperation between Greece and India, and the ambitious India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor, which aims to strengthen connectivity and economic cooperation along a major trade route.
Possible Maritime Security Discussions
Media reports suggested EU foreign ministers might also discuss a possible expansion of the EU naval mission Operation Aspides to the Strait of Hormuz, or the creation of a joint EU–United Nations naval initiative to ensure safe passage in the strategically important waterway.
However, Greek diplomatic sources said the issue is not officially on the meeting’s agenda and described such discussions as premature. They emphasized that the priority at this stage remains a return to diplomatic solutions.
The topic could gain additional attention ahead of the upcoming European Council meeting of March 19, 2026 in Brussels, where the United Nations Secretary-General is expected to participate.
