A top Greek MEP on Friday tabled an urgent question towards the European Commission charging that a report by the European Defence Agency (EDA) includes a reference to the so-called “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus” and recognizes a map showing results of a 2019 Turkey-Libya maritime agreement – which Greece and the European Council, among others, consider as illegal and baseless.
The question was tabled by Yannis Maniatis, the vice-chair of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament, and was also directed at the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, former Estonian prime minister Kaja Kallas.
Maniatis also charged that the same illegitimate references to the Turkish Cypriot pseudo-state and the controversial maritime delimitation deal were found in a document posted by the EDA’s joint research center.
Maniatis emphasized that the references are contrary to international law and the conclusions of the European Council, and blatantly violate the sovereign rights of Greece and Cyprus. Finally, he called on the European Commission and Kallas, who presides over the EDA, to explain how the publication of a report containing such inaccurate information on such sensitive and serious issues was allowed.
Furthermore, Maniatis called on those responsible to correct the report immediately and ensure that such mistakes are not repeated.
