Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has decided to postpone his scheduled end-of-month visit to Australia, with the trip to be rescheduled “when conditions permit,” according to government sources.
Mitsotakis was due to travel to Sydney and Melbourne for Greek Independence Day celebrations on March 25. Aides cited the escalating tensions in the Middle East as making “a trip of such distance particularly difficult at this time.”
The decision also comes against a backdrop of mounting domestic political pressures. A new flashpoint has emerged over the phone surveillance scandal, with PASOK leader Nikos Androulakis demanding an immediate parliamentary debate between the party leaders.
That session had been expected in early April, though Androulakis is reportedly weighing whether to push for an earlier date on the pre-agenda discussion.
