The mayor of the remote Dodecanese Island of Nisyros, Christofis Koroneos, has been included among the most distinguished scientists in the world for 2022, according to Stanford.

Despite serving as mayor for the volcanic and “off-the-beaten-path” isle in the southeast Aegean for the past nine years, Koroneos has maintained a prolific academic career in the field of chemical engineering, earning him a position among the most notable scientists worldwide.

His feat becomes even more impressive considering he was among eight million scientists worldwide that were assessed, based on their published research that and impact on other researchers’ work.

The accolade is earned by academics and researchers ranked in the top 2 percentile of their respective scientific field, based on objective criteria such as the number of citations or an impact factor.
