Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis clarified Greece’s position on international efforts beyond the United Nations, stressing that participation in initiatives such as the Board of Peace proposed by US President Donald Trump will only happen under strict conditions and a defined timeframe. At the same time, he left open the possibility for cooperation with the United States on Gaza reconstruction.
Speaking in an interview with Euronews, Mitsotakis highlighted the importance of ensuring European presence in the future of Gaza, noting that while Greece cannot participate in what has already been proposed by Trump, it seeks a role in agreements addressing the region’s reconstruction, limited to a specific time period.
“The initiative announced by Donald Trump exceeds the mandate of the UN Security Council,” Mitsotakis said. “It is important that the United States is involved in Gaza’s rebuilding. Without Trump’s engagement, we might not have had a ceasefire. Greece could lead efforts to secure consensus, if a framework for cooperation exists, but only regarding Gaza and for a limited duration.”
Mitsotakis also addressed recent US statements on Greenland, describing them as a de-escalation, and emphasized that the European Union must defend its interests amid growing transatlantic pressures. He noted that despite internal disagreements, including Hungary’s differing stance, Europe has maintained a largely unified approach.
On international trade, Mitsotakis stressed the benefits of agreements such as Mercosur, highlighting Greece’s strategic position as a medium-sized, open economy and a leader in global shipping. He underlined the need to foster relations with other countries and trade blocs to strengthen a rules-based international order that supports free trade.
