Greece’s parliamentary committee on armaments programs and contracts is set to convene on Tuesday, May 5, to review and issue its opinion on a 19 million euros contract between the Ministry of National Defence and the Skaramangas Shipyards.
Under the agreement, the shipyards will undertake the full scope of work required for the modernization program of the Hellenic Navy’s MEKO-class frigates, a key component in extending the operational life and capabilities of the fleet.
The contract forms part of a broader policy directive introduced by Defence Minister Nikos Dendias, mandating that at least 25% of defense procurement programs involve participation from the domestic defense industry. The initiative aims to strengthen Greece’s industrial base while ensuring greater national contribution to major military projects.
During the same session, the committee will also be briefed on an implementation agreement outlining the potential acquisition of two FREMM-IT (Bergamini-class) frigates from the Italian Navy, with an option for two additional vessels.
The agreement further provides for the upgrade and maintenance work on these frigates will be carried out at Greek shipyards, reinforcing the role of local industry in supporting new acquisitions.
