Μake us preferred on Google A major firefighting operation remains underway on the Greek island of Kefalonia, where a wildfire that broke out on Saturday, August 1, in the area of Pastra continues to challenge emergency crews.
Firefighters are battling two active fronts in the areas of Mousata and Ratzakli, as strong winds are triggering repeated flare-ups despite the blaze having been brought under partial control.
The most difficult conditions are being reported in southeastern Kefalonia, with active fire pockets above Katelios as well as in Mavrata and Thiramona, where ground crews are working to fully contain the flames. Firefighting aircraft joined the operation from the early morning hours, supporting forces that had fought through the night to prevent the fire from reaching residential areas.
At first light, aerial operations resumed with a Canadair firefighting aircraft, a helicopter and two PZL aircraft operating from Kefalonia Airport. Additional reinforcements also arrived on the island from mainland Greece, while more firefighters were transported by ferry from Kyllini to strengthen the response and tackle ongoing flare-ups.
Driven by powerful winds, the wildfire spread rapidly through the areas of Pastra, Kremmydi, Markopoulo, Mavrata, Thiramona and Katelios. In several locations, the flames came dangerously close to homes, reaching yards and the main road network, prompting a large-scale mobilization by local authorities and emergency services.
During the night, Greece’s emergency alert system 112 was activated several times, with Civil Protection authorities ordering precautionary evacuations in Kremmydi, Markopoulo, Katelios, Mavrata, Chionata and Thiramona.
Residents and visitors were evacuated safely and followed instructions issued by the authorities as firefighters continued their efforts to contain the blaze and protect communities across the island.
