U.S. President Donald Trump launched a blistering attack on migration, renewable energy, and the United Nations itself during his address at the 80th U.N. General Assembly in New York, warning that “uncontrolled migration” was an “assault on Western countries and their borders”. Referring to Europe, Trump said it was in “serious trouble” due to migration.

Calling climate change the “greatest con job ever”, Trump argued that renewable energy was “destroying a large part of the planet”. He accused the U.N. of failing to broker peace in ongoing conflicts and even of assisting illegal migration into the United States. “It is time to end the failed experiment of open borders,” he declared.

“Countries need strong borders,” to become strong again, Trump told world leaders, as tensions between Washington and key allies continue to mount.

While sharply critical, Trump also acknowledged the “tremendous potential” of the United Nations, though he insisted it was “not even coming close to living up to that potential”. He further urged global leaders to halt nuclear weapons development, warning that otherwise “the world literally might come to an end”.

The U.S. president also said that recognizing a Palestinian state would be a “reward for the terrible atrocities” Hamas has committed.
