The family of Wolfgang Schäuble, former Minister of Economy in Germany, announced his passing on Wednesday morning.

According to the family statement, the 81-year-old politician passed away at his home on Tuesday night.

As reported by the German news agency, Schäuble took his “final breath peacefully” at 8 pm on Tuesday, surrounded by his family. A prominent figure in the CDU, he served as the Minister of Economy during Angela Merkel’s tenure, notably during the Euro zone debt crisis.

Schäuble had been a member of the Bundestag for over 50 years and is survived by his 80-year-old wife, Ingeborg, four children, and four grandchildren. His legacy encompasses a long and influential political career in Germany.
