5.1R Quake in SW Aegean

The quake was pinpointed at 21 kilometers east of Antikythira at 15.26 (13.26 GMT), and with a focal depth of 58.6 kilometers

An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale was recorded on Wednesday afternoon between the small southwest Aegean Island of Antikythira and Crete.

According to the geodynamic institute in Athens, the quake was pinpointed at 21 kilometers east of Antikythira at 15.26 (13.26 GMT), and with a focal depth of 58.6 kilometers, considered deep.

In a statement shortly thereafter, the head of Greece’s Earthquake Planning and Protection Organization, Prof. Efthymios Lekkas, appeared reassuring over the specific tremor, referring to a “positive quake that consumed energy.”

He added that the quake – which erupted roughly between Crete and the southern Greece mainland – had a north-south direction, which is also reassuring.
