Greek traffic police have carried out extensive alcohol checks across the wider Athens region, resulting in 10 arrests and 246 confirmed violations over a three-day operation aimed at preventing drunk driving.
According to an official statement by the Hellenic Police, the targeted enforcement campaign was conducted by the Attica Traffic Police Directorate from the early hours of January 23 until the morning of January 26, 2026. The operation covered major road networks throughout Attica, the metropolitan area that includes Athens.

During the campaign, officers conducted 23,010 breathalyzer tests, identifying hundreds of drivers who had consumed alcohol before getting behind the wheel. Of the violations recorded, 10 drivers were arrested after registering alcohol levels exceeding 0.60 mg per liter, a threshold that constitutes a criminal offense under Greek law.
The operation involved specialized road safety units and local traffic police departments, focusing on high-traffic areas and key routes. Authorities said the checks were part of a broader strategy to reduce road accidents and improve driver safety, particularly during nighttime and early morning hours.

Police emphasized that alcohol enforcement checks will continue at full intensity, warning drivers that drinking and driving remains a leading cause of serious traffic accident
