A new network of smart traffic cameras has begun operating on the roads of Athens and Attica, automatically detecting a wide range of traffic violations. The initiative is part of Greece’s updated Highway Code enforcement system, designed to improve road safety and discipline.
So far, 41 cameras have been installed across 17 municipalities in the capital region. By 2026, the number is expected to exceed 500, with devices placed at high-traffic intersections and accident-prone locations.
Automatic detection of red-light, speed, and phone violations
The new system will operate 24 hours a day, identifying violations such as:
- Running red lights
- Exceeding speed limits
- Using mobile phones while driving
- Failing to wear seatbelts or motorcycle helmets
Each violation will be automatically recorded, and the images or video footage will be sent electronically to the Traffic Management Center for verification. Once confirmed, the fine notice will be sent to the driver either by post or digitally through gov.gr.
Digital transfer of responsibility
If the vehicle owner was not the driver at the time of the violation, they can declare the actual driver online, transferring the fine to the correct person.
Authorities emphasize that the new cameras are highly accurate and that recorded violations cannot be disputed without solid proof.
Part of Greece’s road safety modernization
The installation marks a significant step toward digitally enforced road safety in Greece. Officials hope that consistent monitoring and swift penalty delivery will deter reckless driving and reduce road accidents in the capital.
