Alarm was raised at Athens’ Syntagma Metro station on Thursday morning, 12 Feb., after a person fell onto the tracks of Line 2 on a train bound for Elliniko.
Initial reports claimed that it appeared to be suicide. The 65-year-old was carrying a luggage before then falling onto the tracks. The Fire Department took him while he was unconscious. He was later confirmed dead.
The incident caused significant disruption to metro services. Authorities suspended operations at Syntagma station on Line 2, while Line 3 continued to operate normally.
Metro operator STASY said that train services on Line 2 were temporarily running only on the Anthoupoli–Panepistimio and Acropoli–Elliniko sections following what was described as a suicide attempt at Syntagma station.
The company added that Syntagma station remained closed for Line 2 services and no interchange with Line 3 was available, although Line 3 services at the station continued to operate as usual.
