Athens Suburban Railway Stations Set for Major Renovation

Five stations in the Attica region will undergo upgrades aimed at improving passenger comfort, functionality and the overall appearance of Greece’s suburban rail network.

Five stations on the Athens Suburban Railway network are set to undergo renovation works as part of an effort to improve passenger services and modernise railway infrastructure in the Attica region.

The stations included in the project are Ano Liosia, Metamorfosi, Heraklion, Kifisias and Penteli, with GAIAOSE — the company responsible for managing railway real estate assets in Greece — launching an open tender for the renovation works.

The initiative aims to improve the daily travel experience for passengers by upgrading the appearance, functionality and overall condition of the stations.

Renovation works at five railway stations

The project, with a budget of €353,037.14 plus VAT, will be financed by GAIAOSE and includes a series of repairs, upgrades and aesthetic improvements.

Planned interventions include:

  • Waterproofing station shelters and expansion joints
  • Repairing damage and renewing paintwork
  • Removing graffiti and applying anti-graffiti protection
  • Replacing damaged steps, tiles and seating
  • Improving lighting at entrances and platforms
  • Repairing or replacing electronic information displays

GAIAOSE said the works are part of a wider effort coordinated by Greece’s Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport to improve the country’s railway environment through cooperation between railway bodies.

Focus on passenger experience

The company said the goal is to create safer, more functional and higher-quality spaces for passengers while preserving the railway character of the stations.

The upgrades are also intended to strengthen the appeal of rail travel as a modern and reliable transport option.

GAIAOSE CEO Panagiotis Balomenos said that railway improvements have real value when they lead to visible changes in passengers’ everyday experience, adding that the organisation is contributing to a broader effort to create a more modern and reliable railway system.

The deadline for submitting offers for the renovation project has been set for June 22, 2026, according to GAIAOSE.
