Greek police have announced the prevention of a planned grenade attack in the Attica region after a coordinated operation led to the arrest of two foreign nationals and the seizure of a grenade and firearms.

The operation was carried out by the Organized Crime Division following the assessment of intelligence information, according to the Hellenic Police (ELAS). Authorities said the investigation uncovered a plan involving multiple individuals with different roles in preparing the attack.

Suspects and roles

The two people arrested are a 30-year-old foreign national and a 31-year-old foreign national who is already being held in a prison facility in northern Greece. A 27-year-old Greek national is also included in the case file.

Police said the 30-year-old was located in Attica on July 24 during a meeting with the 27-year-old, from whom he received an item disguised as a paper cup.

A subsequent search found an anti-personnel grenade in the 30-year-old’s possession. The device had been secured with cable ties, according to police.

Authorities said the 31-year-old prisoner had a coordinating role in the plan, providing instructions to the 30-year-old regarding the collection of the grenade and its intended use at a location in Attica.

Searches uncover weapons and evidence

During a search of the prison cell where the 31-year-old is being held, police found and seized a mobile phone, which is being examined as a possible means of communication used to provide instructions related to the preparation of the attack.

Authorities also searched a residence in Attica that the 27-year-old had reportedly entered earlier. With the assistance of Greece’s Special Anti-Terrorist Unit (EKAM), officers discovered and seized a revolver containing five rounds of ammunition.

The investigation is continuing as authorities examine the exact role of each person involved and whether additional individuals may be connected to the case.

Items seized during investigation

According to police, the following items were recovered:

• An anti-personnel grenade
• A revolver and six rounds of ammunition
• €4,410 in cash
• Two mobile phones and numerous SIM card packages from different providers
• A baseball cap
• A backpack containing a sheet of paper with sports team stickers and a paper drink cup

The 30-year-old suspect was brought before prosecutors and referred to an investigating judge. The 31-year-old prisoner will appear before prosecutors after the relevant legal procedures are completed.
