Another possible espionage-related incident at the Souda Bay anchorage was reported on Thursday, with a Polish national, 58, becoming the latest foreign national arrested for alleged spying at the important air and naval base in western Crete.
According to initial reports, the man had recently been living in a recreational vehicle near the Marathos area, close to the base. Authorities believe he may have been observing ship movements at the Souda port from this location. A citizen’s tip led authorities to the suspect, prompting the investigation.
During a search, investigators reportedly found a large number of photographs on his mobile phone showing warships entering and leaving the anchorage.
Authorities are now examining the content of the photos as well as the man’s communications to determine where he sent the material and for what purpose. Investigators are also looking into how long he has been in the area.
Police sources said the suspect has denied all allegations against him, claiming he had no intention of spying.
