Bank Union Calls Strike to Halt In-Situ Transactions

The bank employees' union called the industrial action over the firing of three staffers at non-systemic Attica Bank

A union of representing bank employees called a 24-hour nationwide strike on Friday, in a bid to halt all in-person banking transactions at branches across the country.

The strike, organized by the Federation of Bank Employee Unions of Greece (OTOE), comes in response to the recent dismissal of three employees from recently privatized Attica Bank. The federation is demanding the immediate reinstatement of the fired staff.

As part of the protest, a demonstration took place outside Attica Bank’s headquarters in north-central Athens.

Union leaders and employees are calling attention to what they describe as unjust and arbitrary dismissals, warning of broader implications for job security within the banking industry.

Nevertheless, according to reports, practically all banking transactions in the country were unaffected by the industrial action. Participation and impact of OTOE’s sector-wide calls for strikes is usually very low.

Online banking, which now dominates the sector in all facets, was also unaffected.
