Bodies of Two 16-Year-Olds Found in Xanthi-area River

The two cousins had been missing since the previous day, Sunday, with a nationwide alert issued

The search for two teenage boys in northeast Xanthi prefecture ended in tragedy on Monday as the bodies of the two cousins were recovered from the riverbed of the Kosynthos River.

The incident marked the second time this summer that two teenage boys drowned in a river, with the first instance being near the northeast city of Arta.

According to reports by local media, the two 16-year-olds, members of the local Pomak minority, had left their homes on Sunday for a hike. They never returned and their families notified authorities on Monday morning.

An immediate and intense search operation followed by emergency crews and police. The bodies of the two teens were discovered by a passerby, who notified authorities, reports state.

A nationwide alert had been issued for the missing cousins over the previous 24 hours.

An autopsy is pending.
