Greek authorities are investigating the death of a 70-year-old man whose body was discovered early Tuesday morning in the waters near Gate E1 of the port of Piraeus, Greece’s largest harbor and main maritime hub.

The body was retrieved by divers from the Underwater Missions Unit (MYA), a specialized team of the Hellenic Coast Guard. Emergency services, including a Coast Guard patrol and an EKAV ambulance, arrived promptly at the scene.

The man’s remains were transferred to Attikon General Hospital, where a post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the cause of death.

Circumstances Remain Unclear

So far, authorities have not released further details about the man’s identity or how he ended up in the water. The Central Port Authority of Piraeus has launched a preliminary investigation to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The discovery has drawn attention to safety and surveillance measures at the busy port, which serves as a vital gateway connecting Athens to the Aegean islands.
