A 22-year-old man from Koropi, near Athens, is fighting for his life after taking part in a dangerous social media challenge that involved swallowing a whole burger without chewing. The incident, which took place at a fast-food restaurant, has reignited concern over the growing trend of risky online “challenges.”
According to reports, the young man collapsed moments after attempting the stunt as his airways became completely obstructed. Friends at the scene were unable to assist, and by the time emergency services arrived, he was unresponsive.
He was rushed to Georgios Gennimatas Hospital in Athens, where he remains intubated in intensive care with serious damage to his brain, kidneys, and other organs.
Doctors Warn of Growing Danger Behind Online “Challenges”
Dr. Matina Pagoni, a specialist physician, explained that the man’s airways were blocked after he swallowed the burger whole. “There was no one present who knew how to perform the Heimlich maneuver,” she noted, adding that every second counts in such cases.
Pagoni emphasized the urgent need for public awareness and first-aid training, urging people to think twice before taking part in online dares that can have deadly consequences. “It’s not difficult for the airway to become blocked in situations like this,” she said. “Everyone should know how to act when someone is choking.”
Social Media Challenges Under Scrutiny
The incident highlights a worrying trend of dangerous online challenges that continue to spread across social media platforms, often targeting young people seeking viral fame. What may begin as a harmless bet or a moment of fun can, as this tragic case shows, end in life-threatening consequences.
